Analysts call for global action to tackle climate change
November 13, 2024

Dr. A.Z. Hilali (IR Expert):

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif is in Baku representing Pakistan at the Climate Action Summit of COP-29. Pakistan is among the most vulnerable countries to climate change. Couple of years back, the world witnessed devastating floods in Pakistan due to which over 55% agricultural land badly suffered. In the past, the developed countries agreed to establish a fund to help developing countries ravaged by the impacts of global warming. The consensus was reached to this effect by the COP27 in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt was a momentous achievement. The historic fund offers hope to communities across the world fighting for their survival from climate stress. The Prime Minister will definitely highlight the challenges faced by Pakistan and other developing countries due to climate change.

Dr. Muhammad Ijaz (Environmentalist):

Basically, the entire globe is facing the impacts of climate change. The developing countries are paying the price of development of the developed countries. Now the world is recognizing that climate change could have devastating impacts. The carbon emission due to industrialization is causing harm to human health and rise in the temperature as well. Although, Pakistan is not a contributor to carbon emission yet, but is facing certain challenges due to climate change. Now the conferences on climate change are held every year where the participants discuss ways to reduce the impacts of climate change. Hopefully the Loss and Damage Fund will also be discussed in Cop-29 but it is on the developed countries about how serious these countries are to compensate the suffering of the developing countries. It will require trillions of dollars to mitigate the losses caused due to climate change. We have to ensure practical steps to deal with the challenges of climate change rather than to remain dependent on foreign aid in this regard. The government needs to launch electric vehicles to reduce carbon emissions.
