The rise in global drug trafficking from India has put millions of lives under threat.
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, India is a major hub for smuggling illegal drugs and chemicals, with supplies flowing from Myanmar to Central America and Africa.
A report from Deutsch Welle has also pointed out that India has always been a centre of drug trafficking, but the routes and modes of smuggling have become more modernized.
Recently, a report by BBC has also highlighted that the illegal opium shipments from India are destroying thousands of lives and exacerbating a public health crisis.
It also pointed out that India supplies illegal drugs to Central Africa at international level.
In 2023, Nigeria's Drug Control Agency (NDLEA) seized opium worth over 100 million dollars which was supplied from India.
The BBC report said that Nigeria's Drug Control Agency also seized illegal Tramadol drug. Over 4 million people in Nigeria are using opium smuggled from India.
Opioid drugs "Tafradol" and "Tramadol" are being manufactured in India by Indian pharmaceutical company Aveo.
Aveo Director, Vinod Sharma has confirmed Indian authorities' involvement in drug smuggling.
